Is there any benefit to a tank receiving natural sunlight? Or does this make things a little too unpredictable-too much risk of temperature changes and algae growing.

yeah a lot of people in this hobby try to eliminate all possible ways of getting natural sunlight if you did you would prob have to keep on fighting algae and nobody wants that.

On a side note, I have my fuge beside the window and I run my lights on a reverse light cycle. It gives me the advantage of a 24/7 light cycle. I have successfully been growing the dreaded grape caulrpa for a long time with out it going sexual.
As far as displays though, I was just reading that the sunlight spectrum is a lot different from what we as aquarist's use for keeping corals. In addition, corals that are propagated in green houses, under natural sunlight, can have a harder time adapting to hobby lighting.
