Head and Lateral Line Erosion This problem should probably be considered a symptom of aquarium fish illnesses with numerous possible causes, rather than a disease in and of itself. This condition is much easier to describe than it is to explain what causes it, or, better yet, what does not cause it. There has been a great deal of speculation concerning the causes and treatment for this condition. Head and lateral line erosion is commonly known as lateral line disease, or HLLE.
Symptoms include the following:
• Pitting of the skin and loss of color in affected areas surrounding the eyes
and along the sensory organ located in the lateral lines on both sides of the
fish
• Erosion and scarring of the areas around the eyes and along the lateral
lines
• Most commonly seen in tangs and angelfish
• Usually only one or two fish affected
