Default Brookynella Hostillis

Brookynella Hostillis is a disease caused by a protozoan. It affects only fish, not inverts. It is HIGHLY contagious and can kill rapidly. I lost 14 fishes in a row, all of them died within 48-72 hours of the first sign of symptoms. This was also despite my efforts at treatment, using rally, pimafix, melafix, 50% water changes, etc. Copper doesn't work. Seems like the only effective treatment is formalin(which is hard on the fish). Some literature indicates that freshwater baths help. Well, I finally got rid of the problem by making a 90% water change, refilled with real ocean water, added an UV light purifier and some carbon to remove last traces of medicines.
Only 2 fishes survived during the whole chaos, an adult formosa wrasse and a lunar wrasse, also all the snails and inverts.
IMHO, no fish tank should be running without an UV light purifier, all my other fishtanks have one and never had any problem with diseases.
And yes, they all run 24/7, no worries about killing beneficial bacteria. 90% of the beneficial bacteria lives on the rock, not in the water.

List of the fallen:

Blue and Yellow Damsel
(2)Cleaning Wrasses
Majestic Angel
(3)Porcupine Puffers
Australian Harlequin Tusk
Map Puffer
Christmas Islands Golden Puffer
Hawaiian Saddle Back Wrasse
(2)Clown Triggers
Fuzzy Dwarf Lion Fish

In my case, I got the infection due to heavily fouled water with rusted and rotten metal screws and clamps used by the guy who drilled my tank and set up all the plumbing and pumps.
This combined with extremely low water circulation, because the guy used a mag7 for a 98gal tank(used with 6 foot of tubing), water barely came out from the return line.

Brooklynella Hostilis
This parasite infection is commonly known as "Clownfish Disease", because it is so frequently a problem with clownfish, especially wild-caught. Although it is seen most often in clownfish, other species can suffer from infection. Symptoms are usually noticed on only one or two fish to begin with, but it can spread rapidly. Brooklynella hostilis is fast acting and can kill in just a couple of days if left unchecked.
Some possible visible symptoms are the following:
• Increased mucus production
• Loss of appetite
• Turbidity of the skin
• String-like material hanging from the fish
• Increased respiration, or even open-mouth gasping
• Hyperactivity in early stages
• Hiding or reclusiveness
• Cloudy eyes associated with secondary bacterial infections
• Faded colors or discolored areas
• Lethargic in late stages
• Hanging at the surface or laying on the bottom in late stages of infection
• Rapid weight loss associated with dehydration, as fish lose their ability
to osmoregulate.
• Loose scales
• Secondary bacterial infections

Remember, the ONLY way to get rid of Brookynella is with formalin 37%, not the 3% that you find in petco, that's water.

Use the suggested dose DAILY, until the fishes are ok, not every other day like the bottle says.
If you have corals in the tank, use the formalin at night when the lights are off and corals are closed, formalin is harmless to the corals , bacteria and inverts.
Formalin will be in your water for only 2 hours, will be gone after that, its completely reef safe, believe me.
Also very important is to supplement with the Marc Weiss Marine Fish Vital, this product is very unique and contains 1 ingredient that is proven to help the fish get rid of the disease on his own.

Formalin + Marine Fish Vital, you will never loose a fish again.

Here's the link for the Formalin:
Aquarium Fish Medications: Formalin

Here's the link to the Marine Fish Vital:

PS: If you don't have good circulation, you might need to add an airstone to increase the oxygen in the water during those 2 hours.
