I think skimmers are very important small nano reefs can sometimes get along fine with out one if there is very few or no fish.

I agree. I've read multiple articles that say using a skimmer on a nano tank can actually take vital trace elements out of your water.
I don't use a skimmer on my pico, but I wouldn't be caught dead w/o one on my larger tanks. I even have a Coralife SS 65 on my 20g.

Yuck that is nasty but yes you need a skimmer at all times.

yes i do recommend a protein skimmer....you have to remember that it take all the waste from the fish out and also help with anemone's cause there filter feeder's....you wouldn't want to feed them poop
