Default DIY Live rock

Has anybody on the forum ever used the technique of making their own live rock from cement and crushed oyster shell.

If so what information can you give me on it.

If you are starting up a new set-up, would you be able to cure it in the new tank. Thanx.

The big downfall with DIY LR is it takes a long time to cure. If you add to your tank prematurely, it will cause wild PH spikes.

Your best bet is to add a good ammount of dry base rock when setting up a new aquarium and then a little LR to seed the base rock. In a couple months you'll have a tank full of LR at a fraction of the cost. That's my $.02

Have done. Added about 12kg of a whitish rock. I think limestone. It is white on the outer and dark on the inner, and a few pieces are a bit darker. And have about 20kg of LR. It's looking good.

What affects would the spikes have on your tank if you add that prematurely? Would it have a negative affect on your tank?

Hotwriter, PH spikes will cause a negative affect on your tank. It's very important to monitor ph levels.
