Default Adding New Live Stock

The scariest thing that I have read regarding the set up of a saltwater tank, is the risk of killing everything in there when you add something new. But why does that happen?

Is it a PH problem, and therefore could be tested for and maybe corrected? Or is it stress, or something else unavoidable, and how often does it happen?

From personal experience its stress . The fish was shipped from god knows where for god knows how long in a little bag to the pet store . Then it what taken out of the pet stores tank so you could buy it and put in another bag for you to take home . And then theres the chance that it was sick when the pet store got it , usually from stress (Tangs are good for that) and then you put it in your tank and get everything in there sick . Thats why I never put a new fish in my tank or coral either, I QT everything for a MINIMAL of 2 weeks , usually up to 4 weeks . Its a lot easier to medicate 1 or 2 fish in a small tank then all your fish in a large one . and if your have corals or inverts forget about anything with copper in it . Just my 2 sents

Thank you for answering. So, if the fish is just suffering from stress-how would that cause the rest of the fish to get sick?

Stress is the biggest cause of Ick , like I said before ,Tangs are notorious for getting it that way . I'm not 100% sure but I think it weakens their immune system some how . And Ick can be transmited very easily . Some fish (espacially silver or light colored fish) can be on ther verge of death before they even show symptons . I know Pleco's are like that . I lost almost an entire FW community tank that way before i finally got it under control . I tried everything and it took over 2 weeks . I lost over 25 fish out of about 40 in my 120 .Thats why I try to tell everyone to QT their new fish . Its real easy to set one up . All i have is a 10 gallon tank with a hang on back filter and nothing else in the tank. You can put some fake plants or some rocks in it so they feel a little safer but I wouldn't put any gravel in it , just somewhere for uneaten food to rot and foul the water.
